The Porsche 911 is a family of two-door, rear-engine sports cars built since 1964 and among the most recognizable performance cars ever made. Sketched by Ferdinand "Butzi" Porsche and shown in 1963, it was first badged 901 before Peugeot's objection to a three-digit name with a central zero prompted the switch to 911. Its rear-mounted flat-six and 2+2 layout have endured across every generation.

Early cars from 1964 to 1998 used air-cooled engines with torsion-bar suspension; water cooling arrived with the 996 in 1998. The Carrera name, revived from the 356 in honor of Porsche's Carrera Panamericana victories, denotes the sportier, higher-output core of the range, available in rear- or all-wheel drive.

The 911 is one of motorsport's most successful platforms, with Le Mans wins and world championships in the late 1970s. It placed fifth in the 1999 Car of the Century poll, and the millionth example was built in 2017.

Frequently asked

Are the Porsche 911 and 992 the same?
Yes. “992” is Porsche’s internal code for the current, eighth-generation 911 (2019–present). Every 992 is a 911; not every 911 is a 992.
What does 992 mean on a Porsche?
It’s the factory type number for the eighth-generation 911 — the same way 991, 997, and 996 named the generations before it.
How much does a Porsche 992 cost?
New 992s started around $101,000 for a Carrera and climb past $230,000 for a Turbo S or GT3 RS. Used examples generally run from the high-$90,000s into the $200,000s.
Is it a 911 or a 992?
Both. Porsche markets and sells it as the 911; enthusiasts say 992 when they need to specify the generation.
