Toyota ZD8

The Toyota GR86, and its Subaru BRZ twin, is a lightweight rear-wheel-drive sports coupe jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru and built at Subaru's plant in Ota, Gunma. Sold in North America first as the Scion FR-S and then the 86 and GR86, it revives the affordable, enthusiast-focused spirit of the classic AE86 with a front-engine, rear-drive layout and a flat-four boxer engine.

The first generation (2012-2021) used a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated boxer making 200-207 PS. The second-generation GR86 (2021-present) moved to a 2.4-liter FA24D boxer producing 231-235 PS, cutting the 0-97 km/h time to about 5.4 seconds.

The collaboration began after Toyota took a stake in Subaru's parent company in 2008. Under chief engineer Tetsuya Tada, the project overcame Subaru's initial reluctance toward a rear-drive car, with concepts shown from 2009 before production started in January 2012.
