The Mazda MX-5 is a lightweight two-seat roadster in production since 1989, known as the Roadster in Japan and the Miata in North America. It revives the spirit of classic British and Italian roadsters such as the Lotus Elan, MGB, and Triumph Spitfire, built around the principle of jinba ittai, or unity of horse and rider.

The formula centers on low mass, under 1,100 kg in its lightest forms, roughly 50:50 weight distribution, rear-wheel drive, and responsive, controllable handling. Four generations have followed, coded NA, NB, NC, and ND, with the earlier cars front-engined and the NC and ND adopting a front-mid layout.

In 2000 the Guinness Book of World Records named it the best-selling two-seat sports car in history, and more than a million had been built by 2016.
