Toyota GR Supra: The Return, Explained

Seventeen years after the A80, Toyota brought the Supra back with BMW power and Austrian assembly. What the J29 is, in plain terms.

The Toyota GR Supra exists because Toyota decided a 17-year absence was long enough. Built by Magna Steyr in Austria from 2019, it revived the Supra nameplate for the first time since the A80 ended production in 2002[1]. It also returned Toyota to the front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car segment, under the company’s Gazoo Racing performance brand[1] — the GR in the name.

The partnership

The fifth-generation Supra was co-developed with BMW on a shared platform that also underpins the BMW Z4[1]. The engines are BMW’s too: a 1,998 cc B48 turbocharged inline-four in the 2.0, and the 2,998 cc B58 turbocharged inline-six in the 3.0[1]. Purists debated the arrangement; the result is a 3-door liftback coupe[1] with proven mechanicals underneath a distinctly Toyota mission.

The figures

The 2.0-litre four spans 194–255 hp depending on version[1]. The 3.0-litre six launched at 335 hp and later climbed to 382 hp with 499 N⋅m of torque[1]. Car and Driver recorded 0–60 mph in 3.7 seconds for the 3.0[1]; the 2.0 covers it in 4.7[1]. An 8-speed ZF automatic was the standard gearbox, with a 6-speed manual joining the six-cylinder car in 2022[1]. At US launch in 2019, the Supra listed at $49,990[1].

Seventeen years between Supras. The J29 closed the gap with a BMW straight-six and a Gazoo Racing badge.[1]

Its place in the lineup

Launched in January 2019 with US sales from that July[1], the GR Supra ran through 2026[1] and served as the halo above Toyota’s other GR sports cars — the nameplate with three decades of legend attached, doing the brand-building. Special editions from the Launch Edition through the Final Edition[1] marked the run’s chapters along the way. Its character sits somewhere between its parents: BMW’s polish in the drivetrain, Toyota’s intent in the mission — a serious, usable sports coupe rather than a stripped-back special.
