McLaren Artura at a Glance: The Hybrid That Turned the Page

A 120-degree V6, a 94 hp electric motor, and a new carbon platform. How the Artura works, and why it matters to McLaren's direction.

The McLaren Artura is the car McLaren built to change what a McLaren is. In production since 2022, it is the brand’s first series-production V6 hybrid, and it introduces the McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture — MCLA — a new carbon-fibre platform designed around electrification rather than adapted to it.^[1]

The powertrain

The engine is a 2,993 cc twin-turbocharged V6 with an unusual 120-degree bank angle, a hot-vee design producing 577 hp on its own.^[1] An electric motor adds 94 hp, for a combined 680 PS (671 hp) and 720 N·m of torque, delivered at just 2,250 rpm.^[1] Energy comes from a 7.4 kWh lithium-ion battery weighing 88 kg, mounted behind the cabin, good for roughly 31 km of electric-only range.^[1] An 8-speed SSG Seamless Shift dual-clutch gearbox sends everything to the rear wheels in the familiar rear mid-engine layout.^[1]

The performance

McLaren claims 0–100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 330 km/h (205 mph).^[1] The coupé weighs around 1,498 kg at the kerb; the open Spider comes in at about 1,560 kg.^[1] For a plug-in hybrid carrying its own battery, those figures are the quiet achievement of the MCLA platform.

Why it matters

Every maker eventually builds the car that points at its future.
