From the 490 hp Stingray to the 1,064 hp ZR1, the mid-engine Corvette spans an enormous range. How to pick your lane and buy well.
The C8 Chevrolet Corvette, on sale since 2020, covers more ground than almost any single model line: from a 490 hp base car to a 1,064 hp ZR1[1]. The first job for any buyer is deciding which Corvette you are actually shopping for, because these are very different cars wearing one badge.
The lineup, bottom to top
- Stingray. The naturally aspirated 6.2-litre LT2 V8 makes 490 hp, or 495 hp with the performance exhaust, with 465 lb⋅ft of torque[1]. With the Z51 package it reaches 60 mph in roughly 2.9 seconds[1]. The 2021 base car started at $60,995[1].
- Z06. A 5.5-litre flat-plane-crank DOHC V8 with 670 hp and a 195 mph top speed[1].
- E-Ray. The hybrid: 655 combined hp, all-wheel drive, 183 mph[1].
- ZR1. A 5.5-litre twin-turbo LT7 with 1,064 hp and 828 lb⋅ft, 0–60 in 2.3 seconds, 233 mph[1].
- ZR1X. The hybrid ZR1: 1,250 hp, with a claimed 0–60 under 2 seconds[1].
Every C8 uses the 8-speed Tremec dual-clutch — there is no manual[1]. Body styles are a targa-top coupe or a convertible[1]. Collectors should also know the special runs, including the 70th Anniversary Edition and the IMSA GTLM Championship Edition, the latter limited to 1,000 units[1].
Buying well
The advice is the usual, applied firmly. Insist on complete service records. Commission a pre-purchase inspection — on higher-output variants especially, you want a specialist’s eyes on the car before yours are off the paperwork. Verify options and editions against the build documentation rather than the listing. And on early or high-demand variants, be wary of prices detached from condition.
Ask about how the car was used, then verify the answer. These are cars that get tracked, and track use is not a defect — but it should be documented, maintained for, and priced in. Consumables tell the story: have the inspection assess tires, brakes, and fluids, and treat any mismatch between the seller’s account and the car’s wear as your cue to slow down.
