Jaguar F-Type Buyer’s Notes: Finding the Right One in an Eleven-Year Run

Four-cylinder to 575 PS V8, coupé or roadster, rear- or all-wheel drive — the F-Type range rewards buyers who choose deliberately. A short guide to doing exactly that.

Jaguar built the F-Type from December 2012 to June 2024 at Castle Bromwich — 87,731 cars in all.^[1] That is a long run with an unusually wide spread of engines and drivelines, which makes the buying decision less whether and more which one.

Choose the engine first

Three engine families cover the range: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four rated at 300 PS, a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 from 340 to 400 PS, and a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 spanning 450 to 575 PS.^[1] Performance stretches accordingly, from 5.7 seconds to 60 mph in the P300 to 3.5 seconds in the R P575.^[1] Transmissions were a six-speed ZF manual or an eight-speed ZF automatic, with rear- or all-wheel drive, in convertible or fastback coupé bodies.^[1]

At the top of the standard range, the F-Type R made 542 hp and reached 60 mph in 4.0 seconds; the flagship SVR’s 567 hp brought a 200 mph top speed and 3.5 seconds to 60.^[1] A 2019 facelift marks the visual and equipment split in the later cars.^[1]

The limited cars

Three editions matter most to collectors: the 250-unit Project 7, the 400 Sport, and the 150-unit ZP Edition.^[1] On any numbered car, verify the example against its paperwork before paying the premium — the documentation is a large part of what you are buying.

Pre-purchase checklist

• Service history. A complete, stamped record from Jaguar dealers or recognized specialists should anchor any purchase.
• Independent inspection. Commission a PPI and insist on a proper road test, not just a lift check and a scan.
• Convertible condition. On roadsters, cycle the top several times and inspect the fabric and seals closely.
• How it was used. A gently driven car with thin history is not automatically better than a well-used car with a thick file. Buy the story you can verify.
